✈ Vienna – Sarajevo air traffic statistics data for 2024

In 2024, a total of 176.475 passengers traveled between Vienna and Sarajevo, marking a record year for Austrian Airlines on this route. The airline has been operating flights between the two cities since the spring of 1996 and remains the sole carrier serving the route. The Vienna route accounted for 9,68% of Sarajevo Airport’s total passenger traffic last year.

During the summer schedule, Austrian Airlines deployed Airbus A320 aircraft, while Embraer 195 jets were used in the winter timetable. Over the course of the year, the airline operated 1.344 round-trip flights, achieving an average cabin load factor of 84%, which translates to approximately 131 passengers per flight.

Of the total passengers, 88.094 flew from Vienna to Sarajevo, and 88.381 traveled in the opposite direction. The total passenger count represented a 6,17% increase or 10.264 more passengers when compared to the previous year, setting a new milestone in the route’s 29-year history.

✈ Austrian Airlines: Sarajevo - Vienna air traffic statistics for 2023

During the last year Austrian Airlines has recorded its busiest year in terms of  transported  passengers between Vienna and Sarajevo. A total of 166.211 passengers traveled between two capital cities, breaking previous record set in 2019. Austrian Airlines operated 1.335 flights with average cabin load factor of 79,19%.

✈Sarajevo International Airport timetable for February 2021

During the month of February Sarajevo Airport will see airlines decreasing its service. Only four airlines with four destinations will serve the airport during the slowest month of the year. With the coronavirus pandemic raging across the world, possibility of the future flight reductions is very possible. During the month of February following airlines will serve Sarajevo Airport:

• Austrian Airlines – Vienna 4x weekly (1-3-5-7)
• Air Serbia – Belgrade 3x weekly (1---5-7
• Flydubai – Dubai 3x weekly  (--3-56-)
• Turkish Airlines – 7x weekly (-234567)

During the month of February  Turkish Airlines will operate seven weekly flights between Istanbul and Sarajevo, offering 8.680 seats in both directions, followed by Flydubai connecting Dubai and Sarajevo with three weekly flights, offering 4.176 seats in both directions. Austrian Airlines will offer four weekly flight between Vienna and Sarajevo, offering 2.432 seats in both directions. Air Serbia will offer three weekly flights between Belgrade and Sarajevo, offering 1.584 seats in both directions. The slowest months of the year when comes to the airline business is extremely affected by the coronavirus pandemic with bare minimum when comes to commercial flights. As of today, Sarajevo Airport will see a total of 136 commercial flights during the month of February, offering a total of 16.872 seats. With the load factor of around 60% during the majority of pandemic, the month of February will see approximately 10.000 passengers.

✈Ryanair postponed the launch of Vienna-Banja Luka flights

Ryanair has postponed the launch of Vienna-Banja Luka flights to May. Originally flights were scheduled to be inaugurated on March 30, but due to corona virus outbreak the airline had to postpone the launch for May 1st. Flights are scheduled to operate by Lauda Air.

✈Tuzla Winter 2019-20

Winter timetable for Tuzla Airport won’t bring any major changes when compared to the same time last year. Wizz Air is still only airline operating at the airport. 

With the beginning of winter timetable Wizzair is discontinuing its two weekly Vienna flights, but same time is extending Billund to year-round operations. All other flights will remain the same as last winter season.

Due to very incompetent people leading the airport, major airport projects are still not completed and are overdue by one year and longer. Terminal building is still not finished and for the airport that handles around half a million passengers a year its almost impossible to imagine that airport still doesn’t have luggage belts (instead, luggage is still carried manually from the airplanes to the customers at arriving hall)!?

The other major issue is constant delayed installation of landing lights (the airport director Rifat Karahasanovic is well know in Bosnian media for giving staged interviews presenting him self as a “big boss” and constantly giving false information about the airports future and ongoing projects). Transparency and responsibility are strange subjects for majority of Bosnian public companies and employees including the Governments on all levels  when only qualification for the job is being loyal to the ruling party where corruption and nepotism is a norm.

✈ Laudamotion to launch Banjaluka-Vienna flights!

Laudamotion, an Austrian low-cost airline subsidiary of Ryanair, announced its big expansion for the summer of 2020 with 17 new routes from Vienna. Banja Luka International Airport is included in this expansion with two weekly flights from Vienna to Bosnia’s second largest city. Flights are scheduled to operate twice a week beginning on March 30^th, 2020. Flights will operate by Ryanair with Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

✈Wizz Air to launch Tuzla-Vienna flights

Wizz Air has announced its first destination in 2018 from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Tuzla will be connected to Wizz Air’s new base at Vienna Airport. New service will start on April 27. 2018. and will operate year-round, three times weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. With new flights from Vienna, Wizz Air will discontinue its service from Tuzla to Bratislava (which was alternative for Vienna Airport). Last 20 years Austrian Airlines was holding monopoly on flights between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Austria, making these short flights very expansive. With arrival of healthy competitions from low cost carriers we can expect price of airfares of Austrian Airlines service from Vienna to Sarajevo to significantly go down.

✈Austrian Airlines Vienna-Sarajevo winter flight reduction

In winter timetable, Austrian Airlines flights from Vienna to Sarajevo will see additional reduction. Compared to last year’s winter schedule when Austrian Airlines operated 12 weekly flights between two cities, this year schedule will see reductions from 4 to 2 additional weekly flights. Reduction in number of operated flights is due to increased capacity. In winter season Austrian Airlines used to operate Sarajevo flights with a mix of Fokker 70/100 aircraft. As of November, Austrian Airlines is retiring its Fokker fleet (Austrian Airlines sold its Fokker fleet to Australian Alliance Airlines for $15 million US). All previous flights operated with Fokker aircraft will be replaced with larger Embraer 195 aircraft. Austrian Airlines Embraer 195 aircraft has capacity to accommodate 120 passengers while Fokker 70 capacity was 70 seats and Fokker 100 capacity was 100 seats. Month of February will see biggest reduction in flights when weekly number of flights will fall to only eight flights.

Vienna as a city and its airport is one of the most popular destination from the countries in the region. Austria has strong influence and ties to the region. According to the last census data 5,1 % of total Austria’s population is born in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia and Macedonia. ✈Regular charter flights from Tuzla to Vienna to begin Dec. 21.

Tuzla International airport has announced scheduled charter flights from Tuzla to Vienna. Flights will operated by Montenegro Airlines on behalf of the tour operator Mysky on board of  Embraer 195 aircraft, offering 116 seats.Ticket sales have started on Mysky website, price of one way ticket is starting at 20.00 EUR. Flights are scheduled to operate twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays. It is expected that around 20.000 passengers will use direct link between two cities on yearly basis.
