One of the most successful businessmen and investors, a
member of the ruling United Arab Emirates family, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al
Maktoum is attending this year's Sarajevo Business Forum.
Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum, is Chairman and CEO of one of the
world's largest airlines Emirates, confirmed the arrival to the Sarajevo Business Forum 2019, the leading investment conference in
Southeast Europe, which will be held this year from April 17 to 19 under the patronage of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is very likely for Emirates to announce Sarajevo as its next destination as the airline starts receiving smaller aircraft, suitable for Sarajevo Airport operations (Airbus A330-900neo is scheduled to join Emirates fleet from
2021).
Al Maktoum is a senior United Arab Emirates official and is most deserving of
the Dubai meteoric rise of the airline industry for 27 years. He was the lead of the
Civil Aviation Directorate of Dubai since 1985, when the incredible business,
investment and tourism expansion of this emirate, which today is the world's
business metropolis, has begun.
Corporations from the area that Ahmed Al Maktoum is leading
are today the largest in the region and among the most successful in the world. This is not the first visit for Mr. Al Maktoum to the Sarajevo Business Forum. He was a
distinguished guest of the investment conference in 2010. The connection that
was then established was crucial for a later fruitful continuation of
cooperation, and then a decision to establish a direct flights between Dubai and Sarajevo.
Namely, during the visit of the director of BBI Bank Amer
Bukvić Dubai, Sheikh Al Maktoum announced the arrival of one of his airline
"Fly Dubai" in Sarajevo, which was later realized. Today, Flydubai is real engine for the development of tourism and business connections between
Bosnia and Herzegovina and and United Arab Emirates. Sheik Al Maktoum is a graduate of political science in Denver,
USA, and is extremely appreciated in the world of business. He is the holder of
numerous awards and prizes including the Order of Legion of Honor, the highest
French decoration, Legend
of Aviation—2007 Aviation Entrepreneur of the Year.

Dubai-based airline flydubai has announced the start of
flights to Montenegro’s capital Podgorica, which will begin on 01 November.
With two flights a week, the flights include a stopover in Sarajevo, a popular
destination on the flydubai network. Podgorica joins the airlines network in
Central and Eastern Europe, which includes Belgrade, Bratislava, Bucharest,
Prague, Skopje, Sarajevo and Sofia. flydubai will become the only UAE-based
carrier to offer direct air links to Podgorica.
“With the launch of this new route, flydubai will become
the first airline to offer regular services between Podgorica and Sarajevo,”
said Jeyhun Efendi, Senior Vice President Commercial (UAE, EU, ME, CIS) at
flydubai. “We look forward to the new opportunities that this will provide
along with the flows of trade and tourism that these flights can offer.”
Flydubai Boeing 737-800 landing at Sarajevo Int. Airport
From June 23. to September 17. 2017. Flydubai will introduce
5 additional weekly flights between Dubai and Sarajevo. With this addition
Flydubai will operate a total of 12 weekly flights between Dubai and Sarajevo. Dubai based airline will offer total of 4.176 seats weekly between two cities. From June 23rd together with Air Arabia's daily flights from Sharjah, United Arab Emirates will be served with 19 weekly flights from Sarajevo.
In upcoming winter timetable starting on the 30th of October, Sarajevo International Airport will see reduction of flights on the most
popular routes from the city; Sarajevo-Istanbul and Sarajevo-Vienna. Turkish
Airlines will reduce its twice daily service between Istanbul Ataturk Airport
and Sarajevo to 10 weekly flights. Due to weather conditions in winter months
and well known Sarajevo fog and very low visibility, Turkish Airlines has moved
its morning arrival flight from 08:00 am to 11:00 am, which will allow airline
to avoid early morning Sarajevo fog, causing almost daily flight delays and diversions
to other airports in the region. Austrian Airlines will reduce its
flights from 13 weekly from last year to 12 weekly this year. During winter, Sarajevo will lose direct connection to Zurich as well, since Swiss Air has decided
to convert its three weekly flights from year round to summer seasonal. Air
Arabia, also converted, its earlier announced year round, twice weekly service, from Sharjah in United Arab Emirates to Sarajevo to summer seasonal.
More flights to Dubai, Lubljana and Istanbul (SAW)
Three airlines flying to Sarajevo
will increase number of weekly flights, comparing to last winter schedule;
Flydubai will increase its service from Dubai from 2 to 4 weekly, Adria Airways
will increase its service from Ljubljana from 4 to 6 weekly and Pegasus Airlines
will increase its service from Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport to Sarajevo from
4 weekly to 6.
Very limited connectivity
Sarajevo Airport has very limited number of connections to major
hubs in Europe: Amsterdam, Frankfurt, London, Paris, Brussels...etc, and with Swiss
Air dropping Sarajevo during winter months, Sarajevo is losing yet another
important connection to Europe, putting Sarajevo on the list of the worst connected capital cities in Europe, when comes to air transport. Major problem for the airport is that it does not have "home" air
carrier and is lacking presence of low cost carriers, due to high airport
taxes and expensive landing and handling fees, making the airport unattractive and unpopular with the airlines. The airport administration is lacking in
the departments of route development, promotion, marketing and in incentives
to bring air carriers to open new routes and base aircraft at the airport. Only 11 destinations will be served from Sarajevo in upcoming winter (9 in Europe and 2 in Asia)!
New in 2017!?
Possibility of Croatia Airlines to open base at Sarajevo Airport in 2017 has been surfaced, but no official confirmation did come from the airline. Only one new air carrier with
one new destination has been confirmed for the next year; Qatar Airways with three
weekly flights from Doha (Hamad International Airport), Qatar to Sarajevo.
