Germany is one of the most important trade partners of Bosnia and Herzegovina. With around 400.000 citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina living and working in Germany. Many German companies are present and operate on Bosnian market especially in banking sector.

German companies continuously are hiring workforce from Bosnia and Herzegovina for employment in Germany in many fields, but particularly in medical field (all professions), caregivers, building and road constructions, hospitality etc. Due to unstable political and economic situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina majority of young people are deciding to leave Bosnia and Herzegovina in search of better jobs and security. Germany is still number one destination for Bosnians when comes to finding employment outside of Bosnia. Last year alone around 30.000 Bosnians have immigrated to Germany (mostly skilled workforce).

Due to major flow of capital and people all major German cities are connected with flights to airports in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Bosnia and Herzegovina have four international airports and all four have flights to Germany. During 2019, total of 11 airports in Germany are served with flights from Bosnian airports.

Last year Bosnia and Herzegovina recorded 1.919.342 air passengers, with 27% of passengers traveling to and from Germany. Total of 511.588 passengers traveled by airplane between two countries, putting Germany at number one spot for air travel from/to Bosnia and Herzegovina, followed by Turkey in second place with 370.000 air passengers

✈ Ljubljana-Sarajevo air transport statistics for 2019

During 2019 Adria Airways transported a total of 21.975 passengers between Ljubljana and Sarajevo, representing a decrease of 0,87% or 194 passengers less. Due to bankruptcy the airline operated its last flight between Ljubljana and Sarajevo on September 15^th, 2019. after operating the route for 22 years. Currently there is no air link between Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

✈Record year for Sarajevo and Tuzla airports

In 2019, two largest airports in Bosnia and Herzegovina have recorded its busiest year on the record. 

Sarajevo International Airport welcomed 1.143.680 passengers in 2019, representing an increase of 9,27% or 97.045 passengers more compared to 2018. The airport recorded 13.671 aircraft movement, an increase of 1,77%, small increase of 0,61% in cargo handled is recorded too. Sarajevo Airport is expecting another record year when new terminal will be put in function. Lufthansa is adding second daily flight from Munich from April which will significantly  improve passenger numbers. The airport will  see boost in charter flights this coming summer with charter flights to Antalya, Monastir and Hurgada.

Tuzla International Airport welcomed 592.384 passengers in 2019, representing an increase of 1,33% or 7.795 passengers more compared to 2018. During last year the airport recorded decrees in both aircraft movements and cargo handled. Tuzla Airport will also see boost in charter flight in upcoming summer season. Freebird Airlines will operate a total of 31 round trip flights (compared to just 15 round trip flights in 2019). Possibility of charter flights from Tuzla to Hurgada are very likely.

✈ Banja Luka-Memmingen air traffic statistics

For the first eight months of the year Ryanair has transported a total of 26.460 passengers between Memmingen and Banja Luka. The airline operated 140 flights, offering 26.460 seats with an average cabin load factor of 83,07%.

Ryanair started Memmingen-Banja Luka flights on 30.10.2018. with two weekly flights.

✈Bosnia and Herzegovina tourism statistics for 2019

In the period from January – October 2019 tourists realized 1.448.086  arrivals which represent an increase of 12,0% realizing a total of  2.987.903 overnight stays, representing an increase by 10,6% when compared to the same period of 2018.

The number of domestic tourist night stays increased by 8,1% and number of foreign tourist nights increased by 11,5% compared to the same period of 2018.

Domestic tourist’s share of total number of overnight stays was 27,0% and foreign tourists share was 73,0%.

Largest increase of foreign tourist is recorded by tourists from China with +82% or 42.652 tourists more when compared to the same time of last year. By the end of the year number of Chinese tourist could reach 115.000, putting China on the second place by the number of tourists, right after Croatia. Large increase of Chines tourists is due to the fact that Bosnia and Herzegovina and China have abolished visas for tourist visit purposes for its citizens. With such demand for travel from China to Bosnia and Herzegovina it is very likely that direct flights from China to Sarajevo will be established soon. Last year talks were held about possible establishment of flights from China to Sarajevo via Belgrade.

✈Sarajevo and Tuzla statistics for November

Sarajevo Airport has recorded its busiest November on the record since opening its doors 50 years ago. During the month of November, the airport has recorded 67.358 passengers, representing an increase of 8,20%, or 5.105 passengers more compared to the same month of the last year. Year to date airport recorded 1.085.962 passengers, representing an increase of 9,33% or 92.744 passengers more.

Tuzla Airport recorded double digit growth in November, handling 35.484 passengers, an increase of 15,34% or 4.721 passengers more when compared to the same month of the last year. Number of aircraft operation was almost the same as last year, but very high load factor on all flights contributed to 15% increase in passengers. Year to date Tuzla Airport recorded 551.466 passengers, representing an increase of 1,16% or 6.348 passengers more. The month of December should see another month with double digit growth due to Christmas and New Years holiday travels. The airport is expecting to finish this year with 595.000 passengers.

Due to this factor many airlines are opening new routes and increasing flights on existing ones. Last year Ryanair started with flights from Banja Luka to Memmingen and Berlin, while Frankfurt Hahn is set to open in February of next year. During this year Eurowings started with flights from Berlin to Sarajevo, and seasonal flights from Duesseldorf and Stuttgart to Mostar. Due to increased demand for the flights Eurowings is operating majority of its flights from Cologne to Sarajevo with Airbus 320 instead of Airbus 319 (Airbus 320 has capacity of 174 seats while Airbus 319 has capacity to seat 144 passengers). With the beginning of summer schedule in March of 2020, Lufthansa is adding second daily Munich-Sarajevo flight. Flight is targeting transfer passengers since the airplane and crew are staying overnight in Sarajevo (flight is arriving in Sarajevo at 23:00, leaving Sarajevo next day at 06:00). Lufthansa will operate both daily flights from Munich to Sarajevo with Airbus 320 aircraft (168 seats).

Total of 425.171 passengers traveled by airplane between two countries, putting Germany at number one spot for air travel from/to Bosnia and Herzegovina, followed by Turkey in second place with 348.000 air passengers.
