✈ Wizz Air to discuss potential base at Sarajevo Airport

Next week, Wizz Air will hold talks with Sarajevo Airport about the possibility of reopening a base at the airport. The airline plans to base one Airbus A320 aircraft at the airport, with additional details expected to be announced soon.

In the meantime, Wizz Air is expanding its Abu Dhabi-Sarajevo route. Initially, the airline had scheduled 3 to 5 weekly flights between the two cities. However, due to strong demand, Wizz Air is adding 88 additional round-trip flights, increasing seat capacity by 21.032. From April to October, the airline will operate 332 flights on the route, offering a total of 79.348 seats.

With the expansion of flights from Abu Dhabi, Wizz Air has climbed to the fourth position in terms of seat capacity at Sarajevo Airport, with a total of 150.570 seats across three routes: Abu Dhabi, London-Luton, and Rome.

✈easyJet je zainteresovan da uspostavi bazu u Sarajevu!

 

Nakon što sam napravio analizu o dolasku Ryanair-a u Sarajevo, iz meni pouzdanih izvora sam dobio informaciju da je pored Ryanair-a i easyJet zainteresovan za uspostavljanje baze na aerodromu Sarajevo. Pošto sam analizirao Ryanair, sada ću to isto uraditi i za easyJet.

easyJet  je britanski niskotarifni avioprijevoznik s glavnom bazom na londonskom aerodromu Luton. Kompaniju je osnovao  Stelios Haji-Ioannou 1995. godine, po ugledu na američki Southwest Airlines. Kompanija posluje u sklopu grupe easyGroup koja je uspostavila europski odjel kompanije nakon izlaska Velike Britanije iz EU . Kompanija posjeduje europski Air Operators Certificate (AOC) sa sjedistem u Beču. Kompanija posjeduje i švicarski Air Operators Certificate (AOC).

easyJet je jedna od najvecih europskih avio kompanija, koja u floti ima 276 aviona. Kompanija u floti ima slijedeće avione:

Airbus 319 (94 aviona) – kapacitet 150 sjedišta

Airbus 320 (167 aviona) – kapacitet 186 sjedišta

Airbus 321 (15 aviona) – kapacitet 235 sjedišta

Kompanija trenutno ima narudžbu za 161 aviona (Airbus 320neo, 128 aviona i Airbus 321neo, 33 aviona)

easyJet većinu svojih operacija obavlja u zapadnom dijelu Europe, a ako se dogodi da avio kompanija uspostavi bazu u Sarajevu, to će biti njihova prva baza izvan Europske Unije i Švicarske.

Lista aerodroma sa najvećim brojem letova easyJet-a:

easyJet ima idealnu flotu za bazu u Sarajevu, Airbus 319 je avion manjeg kapaciteta i može se koristiti na destinacijama koje su u razvoju ili tokom zime kada su putovanja znatno manja. Tokom ljetnih mjeseci Airbus 320 je idealan jer nudi veci  broj sjedišta.Po mom mišljenju easyJet bi tokom ljetnih mjeseci u početku imao dva bazna aviona u Sarajevu, tipa Airbus 319, dok bi tokom zimskih mjeseci kompanija u Sarajevu imala jedan bazni avion, tipa Airbus 319. Nakon prve sezone kompanija bi imala stacionirana dva aviona tokom cijele godine. Kao i u slučaju Ryanair-a i easyJet bi počeo sa letovima sa početkom aprila 2023. godine. Prednost easyJet-a u odnosu na Ryanair je u tome što easyJet većinu svojih letova obavlja sa glavnih europskih aerodroma, ali samim tim i cijene karata bi bile veće u odnosu na Ryanair.

Sa ovim redom letenja kompanija bi imala 40 sedmičnih letova, u prosjeku 6 dnevni polazaka svakog dana. Sa ovim brojem polazaka kompanija bi imala na raspolaganju 12.000 sjedišta svake sedmice ili 1.714 raspoloživih sjedišta na dnevnoj bazi. Godišnji broj raspoloživih sjedišta sa gore navedenim redom letenja bi bio oko 624.000 sjedišta, sa prosječna popunjenost kabine od oko 85%, znači da bi aerodrom Sarajevo dobio oko 530.000 putnika na godišnjem nivou.

✈Dolazi li Ryanair u Sarajevo?

 

Aerodrom Sarajevo je raspisao javni poziv avio kompanijama za uspostavljanje baze na aerodromu, s obzirom da će se popusti davati kopanijama po broju prevezenih putnika, možemo sa sigurnošću reći da se radi o niskobudžetnim avio prijevoznicima. S obzirom da je Wizz Air odlučio da se povuče sa aerodroma Sarajevo, iako je ove godine prevezao oko 400.000 putnika za i iz Sarajeva, nije upitno da je potencijal aerodroma veliki za niskobudžetne avio  kompanije, ali Wizz Air je zbog sopstvenih financijskih problema odlučio da se preusmjeri na letove u svojoj bazi u Tuzli (Wizz Air je tokom ove godine zatvorio 9 od ukupno 43 baze širom Europe).

Mogućnost dolaska Ryanair-a je izuzetno velika s obzirom da je ta avio kompanija najveća u Europi i posjeduje sve mogućnosti u ovom momentu da otvori bazu na sarajevskom aerodromu. Mnoge avio kompanije i dalje imaju izuzetne financijske probleme izazvane pandemijom ali Ryanair je u jako povoljnoj financijskoj poziciji i posjeduje sve mogućnosti daljnjeg širenja. S obzirom da je Ryanair već prisutan u Bosni i Hercegovini sa letovima u Banjaluci i od početka novembra i sa letovima ka Tuzli, kompanija već ima uvid u naše tržište. Interesantna je činjenica da je Ryanair već objavio red letenja i pustio u prodaju karte za ljetni red letenja 2023. godine, ali letovi za Banjluku su nedostupni, dok su letovi za Tuzlu u prodaji. Da li je ovo neka naznaka da je već odluka tu, da će Ryanair početi sa letovima iz Sarajeva!?

Ryanair je otvaranjem baze u Zagrebu napravio sam sebi konkurenciju  na letovima iz Banjaluke, zbog blizine ova dva grada i povezanosti Zagreba i Banjaluke auto putem. S otvaranjem Ryanairove baze u Zagrebu Wizz Air je dobio šansu za širenje u Banjaluci, a hoće li je iskoristiti to ćemo tek vidjeti.

Po mojoj procjeni jako je izvjesno da će Ryanair od aprila početi sa letovima iz Sarajeva i s obzirom da Ryanair ima puno veću mrežu letova po Europi, prednost Ryanair-a za aerodrom Sarajevo je puno veća od Wizzair-a. Ukoliko se ostvari moja procjena, Ryanair bi u početku uspostavio bazu sa dva aviona (Boeing 737-800), ovaj avion ima kapacitiet od 189 sjedišta. Kompanija bi širila svoje prisustvo na aerodromu sa dodatkom po jednog aviona svake godine. Moje procjene su da postoji tržište da kompanija ima bazu od 4 aviona u narednih 5 godina i dostigne brojku od million putnika na godišnjem nivou.

Lista destinacija koje bi bile uspostostavljene u početku sa dva aviona (April 2023 godine):

Sa ovim redom letenja kompanija bih imala 40 sedmičnih letova, u prosjeku 6 dnevni polazaka svakog dana. Sa ovim brojem polazaka kompanija bih imala na raspolaganju 15.120 sjedišta svake sedmice ili 2.160 raspoloživih sjedišta na dnevnoj bazi. Godišnji broj raspoloživih sjedišta sa gore navedenim redom letenja bi bio oko 700.000 sjedišta. Uzimajući u obzir da Ryaniar-ova prosječna popunjenost kabine je oko 90%, znači da bi aerodrom Sarajevo dobio oko 630.000 putnika na godišnjem nivou.

✈ Wizz Air opens Sarajevo Airport base!

Wizz Air, Europe's fastest growing airline, opened its base in Sarajevo today. At the ceremony held at the Sarajevo International Airport, the news about the establishment of another route was announced. Wizz Air has added Stockholm to its list of cities with which it will connect Sarajevo. Seats on the route can already be booked on wizzair.com or on the airline's mobile app from as low as 58.99 BAM/29.99 EUR*.

Thanks to an allocation on modern Airbus A320 aircraft, Wizz Air now offers 9 routes to 7 countries from Sarajevo. From May 2021 the operations from Sarajevo will be established to: Brussels Charleroi, Copenhagen, Dortmund, Eindhoven, Gothenburg, Memmingen, Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (Euroairport), Paris Beauvais and from July 16 to Stockholm (Skavsta Airport).

✈Wizz Air to start Sarajevo-Stockholm flights

Today, Wizz Air has announced one more route from its new base in Sarajevo. Stockholm-Skavsta Airport will be served with two weekly flights beginning July 16^th. The airline will compete indirectly with Norwegian Air, as the Norwegian Air is reintroducing its Stockholm Arlanda-Sarajevo flights from June 29^th.  

With opening of reservations for Stockholm Skavsta flights, Wizz Air has discontinued sales of tickets for Sarajevo-London Luton.

✈Wizz Air – Sarajevo base analysis

Wizz Air has announced a new base at Sarajevo – its second in Bosnia and Herzegovina after Tuzla. It will start on 20 May and will initially have nine routes, all twice- or three-weekly, for a total of 21-weekly. The routes focus on Bosnian VFR, especially those to Germany, Switzerland, and Scandinavia.

None of Wizz Air’s new routes will have direct competition, and only two will have indirect competition from Sarajevo.  Most will come from itself at Tuzla, raising the question of whether any consolidation will happen.

In 2019, round-trip point-to-point demand – before stimulation in most cases – was approximately as follows, based on booking data from OAG Traffic Analyzer:

• London: 19,000
• Amsterdam: 16,000
• Munich: 15,000
• Copenhagen: 14,000
• Paris: 14,000
• Brussels: 12,000
• Gothenburg: 7,000
• Düsseldorf and Cologne: 9,000 (indirect only)
• Basel: 3,000 (rising to over 30,000 with Zurich, ~92km away, is included; Zurich ended in 2019)

The above figures exclude leakage to Tuzla (~110km away) and demand that goes by coach. Coach demand was always big business from the country

Wizz Air’s new Sarajevo base will initially have one aircraft which will operate six sectors each day from 06:10 until 23:00. Wizz Air also ensures maximum aircraft utilization, with very high aircraft usage. On the average Sarajevo based aircraft is flying 13,5 hours per day (13,5 hours is only the air time, when aircraft is in the flight, does not include taxing and other airport operations. 

Multiple markets have been served from Sarajevo in the past decade:

• Amsterdam by BH Airlines until 2012
• Charleroi by TUI Belgium in 2017
• Copenhagen by BH Airlines, Norwegian, and SAS. Two carriers were on it in most years and it ended in 2019
• Gothenburg by BH Airlines until 2011 and then Norwegian in 2019
• London-Luton by FlyBosnia in 2019 and 2020
• Zurich by BH Airlines until 2013 and then Swiss between 2015 and 2019

Belgium, France, and the UK will once again be connected with Bosnia and Herzegovina. Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina will benefit on many levels by having direct air link with London, Paris and Brussels.

Wizz Air previously served London-Luton from Tuzla.  It ended in 2017 and had an estimated SLF of 74%, based on 20,159 passengers and 27,360 seats. The traffic shows how well markets can be stimulated, with London demand from Sarajevo and Tuzla exceeding 38,000 in 2017 – almost double the year before. Of course, this does not mean that SLF, fares, and sector revenue will always be sufficient, so the need for corrective measures.

Sarajevo Airport incentive for airline base

• In the first stage, the base is set up for two aircraft, with the option of increasing number of aircraft, as available capacities increase at Sarajevo International Airport or when other conditions are fulfilled.
• The aircraft types must have the capacity of 150 passengers or more
• The base of the airline carrier is set up for the period from 2021 until 2023.

Wizz Air has opened its base at Sarajevo with one Airbus 320 with nine new routes from Sarajevo, even though requirement for winning the tender was two aircraft. Wizz Air was the only company applying for the incentive, giving it stronger negotiation position. In the first year of the airlines base operations at Sarajevo Airport the airline will strengthen its position paving the road for summer of 2022, when the aviation sector is expecting full rebound from the pandemic. In summer timetable of 2022, we can expect second aircraft to be based at Sarajevo Airport with additional destinations introduced. Underserved market from Sarajevo with indirect traffic in 2019 with at least 8000 one-way passengers are : Rome, Barcelona, Milan, Hamburg, Oslo, Stockholm, Helsinki, Berlin, Frankfurt, Dusseldorf, Geneva,  Athens, Skopje, Antalya, Izmir, Ankara, Bucharest, Warsaw, and Tel Aviv.

With second A320 being based in Sarajevo, Wizz Air has high probability to start following routes:

✈Sarajevo aims for two based aircraft; what routes are most likely?

Sarajevo in talks with a “successful European airline” for two based aircraft. It is very keen, so whoever it is – perhaps Wizz Air or Ryanair, or a strong regional operator – would probably get an excellent deal.

Sarajevo’s keenness is from the end of scheduled flights with FlyBosnia, although it was reported in December that the carrier is to lease three A320s – replacing its sole A319.  Given the on-going issues between the carrier and airport, its resurgence will be separate to the tender.

Sarajevo’s desire for based aircraft is from the fast growth of Wizz Air at Tuzla, located some 119 kilometers away, and to a much lower degree Ryanair at Banja Luka (241 kilometers).

Sarajevo is very underserved, with over half of its traffic flying indirectly in 2019, booking data shows.

 

Up to 21 routes likely for Sarajevo

These are Sarajevo’s top unserved or very unserved markets in 2019 based on booking data obtained via OAG Traffic Analyser. Note that any specific airport, like CDG or Gatwick, is just a proxy for the whole city.

Assuming two aircraft and a ULCC, which would make the most sense, it could have 14 to 21 routes, each at three- or twice-weekly.

The markets illustrated below are Sarajevo’s largest unserved and those very underserved. They are based on Sarajevo’s traffic only and exclude leakage to Tuzla and Banja Luka and bus traffic.

The markets had a median P2P demand of 8,000 before stimulation in 2019. Frankfurt is top with 21,000 and London second with 19,000, booking data indicates.

Most are about Bosnian VFR, especially Germany, Switzerland, and Scandinavia.

The Turkish opportunities are very unlikely as the winning carrier won’t have a Bosnian AOC, but they have strong P2P demand before stimulation. For example, 17,000 for Ankara and 13,000 for Izmir.

From Sarajevo, most routes would be within the LCC sweet spot of one to two hours, meaning more sectors per aircraft per day and therefore more passengers and more negotiating ability.

✈ Sarajevo Airport Incentive for airlines to open base!

Sarajevo International Airport is offering incentive for all airlines interested in opening base at the airport:

In accordance with a Management Board Decision from 26th August 2020 and an item 18.4 of Airport Handling Charge List - Incentives for Airline Companies which have a base at Sarajevo International Airport in the aim of mitigating negative impacts caused by COVID-19 pandemic at Sarajevo International Airport.

Sarajevo International Airport LLC, ISSUES PUBLIC NOTICE for submitting proposals for an airline base opening at Sarajevo International Airport in a period from 2021 until 2023

 I Subject of the Public Notice 

Subject of the Public Notice is the opening of the airline base at Sarajevo International Airport. The base implies a place set by airline carriers, where a member of crew personnel starts and ends time of duty or duty periods and where, under normal circumstances, an operator is not under obligation to provide an accommodation for a member of crew personnel. In the first stage, the base is set up for two aircraft, with the option of increasing number of aircraft, as available capacities increase at Sarajevo International Airport or when other conditions are fulfilled. 

II Entitlement to Participate 

All airline companies which plan to introduce scheduled route/s at Sarajevo International Airport are entitled to submit a request for the base. 

III Time Period for the Airline Base 

The base of the airline carrier is set up for the period from 2021 until 2023.

 IV Airport Operating Hours

 It is mandatory to comply with the airport operating hours, the same for Winter as well as for Summer flight schedule. 

V Public Notice Criteria 

1. Number of Weekly Air Operations

-Those air carriers which plan to carry out the largest number of air operations per week/month, i.e. per year, shall have a priority.

-Those air carriers which plan to increase a number of air operations in 2022 and 2023, shall have a priority. 

2. Number of Passengers per Year in Accordance with a Chart Below

Incentive program based upon the number of passengers for the airline companies which have a base at Sarajevo International Airport shall be approved by a previous written request/information of the airline company on estimated number of passengers (total number of passengers, as well as upon the number of outbound passengers) for the current year, based upon the Airport's handling charge list and upon the outcome of negotiations. 

Also, taking into consideration that the discount is approved in advance, after the end of a calendar year, the Company shall revise accomplished quantitative indicators (total number of passengers/total number of outbound passengers) for the airline companies which have a discount in accordance with the item 18.4 of the Charge List, and corrections shall be done immediately, if necessary. 

3. Air Carrier Flight Destinations 

Those air carriers which plan to launch a larger number of destination routes shall have a priority as well as those which plan to launch routes towards destinations where there were no flights in 2019. 

4. Number and Aircraft Types Which are to Be Used by the Air Carrier for Air Operations (Aircraft Characteristics, Aircraft Wingspan, MTOW) 

Those airline companies which plan to operate with aircraft types which have the capacity of 150 passengers or more shall have a priority, whereat satisfying environment protection and noise protection requirements in compliance with legal regulations, runway weight bearing capacity, Sarajevo airport technical characteristics etc.

VI Deadline for Submission of Proposals 

A proposal for the airline base must be submitted in writing and it needs to include all necessary information in relation to the above mentioned criteria (the number of weekly operations, the estimated number of outbound passengers as well as the total number of estimated passengers which an airline company plans to transport per year, the number of destination routes and destination routes towards which an airline company plans to launch flights from Sarajevo, as well as aircraft types which an airline company plans to use for air operations). 

Written requests are submitted within 30 days from the day of the public notice publication. In case of different publication dates in different media, the deadline starts from the last publication date by Sarajevo International Airport. ✈ Tuzla Int. Airport: Wizz air flight schedule summer 2017

From March 27. 2017, Wizz air will offer 15.480 weekly seats (7.740 arriving and 7.740 departing) seats from and to Tuzla International Airport. Number of flights will rise to 43 departures and 43 arrivals (total 86 weekly operations). The airline will base second Airbus 320 at the airport on March 27. 2017. Number of seats offered in Summer schedule (from 03/27/2017 to 10/28/2017) will be 466.560, with average cabin load factor of 80% Tuzla International Airport should expect 373.248 passengers from April 01.2017. to October 28.2017.). For the whole year of 2017, the airport should handle approximately 560.000 passengers.

✈ WIZZ AIR ANNOUNCES MAJOR EXPANSION IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA !

SECOND BASED A320 AIRCRAFT IN TUZLA, SIX NEW ROUTES FROM MARCH 2017

Wizz Air, the largest low-cost airline in Central and Eastern Europe announced today that it will base a second Airbus A320 aircraft at its Tuzla base. From March 2017 the airline will operate five new services from Tuzla to Cologne, Friedrichshafen and Nuremberg in Germany, Bratislava in Slovakia and Växjö in Sweden. The new aircraft will allow Wizz Air to increase the number of weekly flights on the existing routes from Tuzla to Eindhoven, Gothenburg, Malmo and Frankfurt Hahn. Wizz Air also announced its newest route connecting Tuzla with London Luton in the United Kingdom from 30 October. 

The first WIZZ flight took from Tuzla in May 2013 and since then the airline became the largest airline in Bosnia and Herzegovina, while constantly expanding its low-fare route network. Underlining its commitment to the country, just two years after launching its Bosnia operations, Wizz Air established base operations in Tuzla. In 2015 Wizz Air carried more than 250.000 passengers on its low fare Bosnia and Herzegovina routes supporting over 200 local jobs*.

The new aircraft represents an investment of € 98 million** by WIZZ in Bosnia and Herzegovina, creating 36 additional direct jobs at the airline. Wizz Air’s new employees will join a dedicated local crew, who deliver excellent onboard service on each WIZZ flight.
